Old Friends

I've got to tell the trees
this most wonderful secret,
but maybe they know already!
They've been such good teachers,
their stillness, their perserverance
through storms and seasons.
Infinitely patient, taking all in stride,
bending to great force but rarely breaking.
They are worthy of great praise.

And they're such good listeners!
Do they see of themselves
what I see of them, and all
their brothers and sisters?
I'll never really know.
But I consider them kind friends.
