Phil's Mondo India Slide Show
Sights of Varanasi

There are temples everywhere in Varanasi, some just little spots in alleyways.

A small area in a sidestreet makes for a small Ganesh temple. Here's a small statue of Ganesh - notice the rat below him in the bottom of the statue - there a ageless connection between rats (or mice) and elephants.

The central area of Varanasi is called Godaulia, and some say it is the oldest city in the world. The steets are incredibly narrow, so much so that only a small motorbike, bicycle or cow could fit down the street. It is also stifling hot, dark, dirty, overpoweringly smelly, but definitely something to behold. You can get lost in its numerous side streets and alleyways, and there are vendors for all kinds of spiritual accessories - I bought a Shivalingam here for a very fair price.
