Phil's Mondo India Slide Show
Raj Ghat, The Tomb of Mahatma Gandhi

Another island of peace amidst the chaos of Delhi is the Raj Ghat, part of a large park on the banks of the Yamuna river that houses the crypts of Mahatman Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.

The Raj Ghat was a most blissful and heart-breaking surprise, and an early highlight of my trek.

The area was filled with a paplable divine presence, be it from Gandhi or the millions of worhsipers who have come here. I was moved nearly to tears in this place of great stillness and tranquility. Though not seen in these pictures, I saw Indians of different religions come here to pay their respects - all differences were left at the gate for one who led India to independence from British rule.

As with many 'samadhi' sites of great saints and holy individuals, it is common practice to circumambulate the crypt three times, repeating a mantra of some significance to the saint. The box at the far end of the black marble crypt is an 'eternal flame' for the site. I stayed here for a long time, being very moved and enjoy the radiance of the place, despite an abnoxious sales pitch from my tour guide for a psychic reading.
