Phil's Mondo India Slide Show
Sights of Rishikesh
Here we have two scenes of the Ganges River, India's most famous and sacred river.
Another attribute of Rishikesh is that is is the first major village along the Ganges, which
means that the water is fairly clear and clean enough in which to swim and bathe (for a
westerner unaccustomed to Indian microbes), a stark contrast to other cities downstream.

This is a view of the Ganges and the Himalayan foothills from my hotel, The Hotel Ganges Kinare, in the outskirts
of Rishikesh (but walkable to downtown). The hotel grounds hosts a small temple which is served by a priest
every morning, and to the right of the temple is a small ghat, or set of stairs leading down to the river.
I took advantage
of the stairs to do a little bathing in the Ganges, which is a rite of purification. Rishikesh is built along a long
and gentle bend in the Ganges river, which has a particular potent effect of revealing the sacred power of
of Gangagi, the goddess associated with the Ganges.

Here you can see the lush tropical quality of the Himalayan foothills. The attending monk is leading several
women and myself to the second Vasishta cave just above where he is standing. It is quite an idyllic spot, and even
for yogi caves it's location, location, location! Lots of butterflies were around.
