Phil's Mondo India Slide Show
Sights of Tiruvanamalai

Just before Ramana's first cave, called Skandashram, one gets a panoramic view of Tiruvanamalai and in particular, the huge Arunachaleswar temple. If you look closely, you can count all eleven towers. When I got to Ramana's cave, it found it remarkable how close to the downown flats they were, only 500-800 feet up. But Tiru was very likely much smaller and quieter in Ramana's days.

Both caves have had a building built around them, this one is called Skandashram, the larger of the two. It is a beautiful and meticulously kept up place. Ramana spent about 7 years in this cave. There are two parts to the ashram, the outer area, and a small inner sanctum which is the actual cave, which can seat only 3 people.
