Sights of Buddhist Sarnath

This particular scene commemorates Buddha's first sermon to his friends. When Buddha left his princehood to become a renunciate and ascetic, he did so with five of his friends. But when he began taking food normally, renouncing the ascetic way, his actions were frowned upon by his friends. But this all changed when he delivered this important sermon - his friends became his first devotees.

Budda attained enlightenment under the 'Bodhi tree' near Bodgaya, east of Varanasi. Throughout the centuries, saplings of the original tree were saved to prevent the tree from being eradicated. One of the saplings were planted here in Sarnath, and this plaque and prayer flags commemorate the tree.
