Phil's All Embracing Bhutan Slide Show
Scenes from Darjeeling, India
|
Looking north, we see the high peaks of the Nepalese Himalayas. It is a fairly rare
occasion when the ubiqitous fog and haze of West Bengal lifts to allows for views of
the magnificent peaks to the north. We were lucky both mornings we were in Darjeeling,
but by late morning, the views were gone.

In the center of the picture lies Kanchenjunga, the world's third highest mountain. At 28,000 feet,
Kanchenjunga was first climbed by the south-west face in 1955 by Charles Evans and has only been
open to group trekkers since 1988. Recently this beautiful unspoilt region has been designated a
conservation area.
